plan at third base Left Side of the Infield TimeshareOrlando Arcia has been moving around the left side of the infield this spring, getting reps at third and shortstop. This materialized in the current plan according to Craig Counsell - for Arcia to share time with Travis Shaw at third and Luis Urías at shortstop. Arcia has been the starting shortstop for the Crew for the last four years. That may change this year, as the Brewers are intent on giving Luis Urías a real shot at short. Urías made limited appearances in 2020, his first season with the Brewers, because of injury, the shortened season, and contracting COVID-19. Counsell said the plan now is for Arcia to share time with Shaw at 3B and share time with Urias at SS Milwaukee Brewers Custom Jersey. Meet the MetsThe Mets fell to the Marlins 3-1 in walk-off fashion in the second game of a three-game series in Miami. It was a pitcher’s duel early, as Pablo López and Joey Lucchesi traded zeros for the first four innings. It was Lucchesi’s best outing as a Met; he struck out eight over four innings of work and allowed only one hit. López ended up lasting seven scoreless, shutting out a depleted Mets lineup. The Marlins scored first in the eighth on a sacrifice fly on which Tomás Nido dropped the throw while applying the tag. The Mets answered, tying it up in the bottom of the frame on a Dominic Smith RBI single. However, with one strike away from sending the game to extra innings for the second straight day, Drew Smith gave up a walk-off homer to Garrett Cooper in the bottom of the ninth. Choose your recap: Amazin’ Avenue short and long, NY Post, Daily News, Newsday, North Jersey, MLB.com, Faith and Fear in FlushingJake Mintz of FOX Sports interviewed members of the Palm Beach Cardinals who faced Seth Lugo, Noah Syndergaard, and Jacob deGrom all in short order. The whole piece is chock full of incredible quotes but here is just one of them from pitcher John Beller, who was the starting pitcher on the day of deGrom’s rehab start: “During the game on Wednesday, our manager came up to me and said, ‘Hey, Papi, you’re going up against deGrom tomorrow.’ And I didn’t believe it because it wasn’t published anywhere yet. And he was, ‘I’ll bet you a bottle of wine.’ I thought he was lying, so I took that bet, thought he was just pullin’ my chain. Sure enough, within a few hours after the game, it’s blowing up on Twitter. ‘Jacob deGrom will be making a rehab start against Low-A Palm Beach,’ and I’m like, ‘You gotta be s---ting me.’ I immediately knew it was gonna be one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced.”Palm Beach shortstop Masyn Winn talked about how the players pitched with deGrom on MLB The Show before the game because, “That’s all you can really do. Because he’s pretty much a video game character.” “I’ve never seen anything like this,” manager Luis Rojas said after Friday night’s win about his resilient group of rag-tag replacement players. “But I’m proud of the group. Very proud.” Brandon Nimmo is close to swinging the bat again. “It’s been extremely frustrating Travis Blankenhorn Jersey, because obviously when it happened I thought this might be a few days,” Nimmo said prior to yesterday’s game. It turns out the source of the lingering pain is an irritated nerve in his finger that was aggravated by his bone bruise. Meanwhile, Albert Almora Jr. will also need some more time on the IL for his bruised shoulder and Luis Rojas does not expect him back during the next home stand. And Carlos Carrasco has yet to begin throwing off a mound again. The Mets recalled Jordan Yamamoto from Triple-A Syracuse. To make room on the roster for him, the Mets designated Jake Hager for assignment. “It was really tough,” Luis Rojas said about his conversation with Hager, who just got his first major league hit to help set up the twelfth inning rally in Friday night’s game. “I can imagine it was as tough for him, as it was tough for me. I did tell him that this is something that can happen, and he should not put his head down. He got himself here. He’s one of our best hitters in Syracuse. So just keep working hard, keep looking forward and I pray that he’s with us and he meets us again down the road.”Regarding James McCann losing playing time to Tomás Nido https://www.nymgear.com/francisco-lindor-jersey, Rojas said, “Nido has been part of the winning formula lately. About the conversations with McCann, we’ve had it throughout the week. I told him that Nido is going to get a little bit more playing time since he’s been playing really good, and we wanted just to keep that going. The two times that we talked, I told him to see this as an opportunity for him to work on some things so he can get his bat going, and still work on his catching routine, which is very consistent when he and [catching coach] Brian Schneider work on some things. That’s the way he’s taking it. He’s a professional, he’s a great teammate and he’s been great about it.”Outfield prospect Jake Mangum has been promoted to Double-A Binghamton. Around the National League EastThe Nationals beat the Orioles 12-9 https://www.nymgear.com/james-mccann-jersey, despite Baltimore putting up a five spot in the first inning off Jon Lester. Josh Harrison hit a grand slam, Juan Soto went 2-for-4, and Ryan Zimmerman provided a tie-breaking home run in the fourth inning that broke the Nationals franchise record for home runs. Brad Hand pitched well in the game also, snapping a streak of shaky outings. The Nationals remain committed to him as the closer. The Phillies dropped their fourth straight in a tight 4-3 loss to the Red Sox at Citizen’s Bank Park. Top prospect Spencer Howard was the starter for Philadelphia yesterday and saw a sharp drop in velocity on his fastball in the third inning, which is something he’s struggled with in the past and continues to be the subject of concern for the Phillies. The Braves beat the Pirates 6-1 thanks to the bats of Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies. Acuña led off the game with a home run—his 15th of the season—and Albies contributed two long balls of his own. The Braves acquired reliever Yoan López, who was designated for assignment by Diamondbacks last week. The Braves optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.Around Major League BaseballJoel Sherman of the Post has some suggestions for ways MLB can boost offense moving forward in what has become an era dominated by pitching: lower the strike zone, really address the use of sticky substances by pitchers, and limit defensive shifting.Steve Martano of Beyond the Box Score also takes a look into what MLB can do to fix the aspects of the game that aren’t working right now. Also for Beyond the Box Score, Randy Holt discusses the reckoning with mental health issues that baseball—and our society at large—is facing.Former Met Ty Kelly has been signed by the Mariners to a minor league deal. game in which their two best hitters are given off days and half of the starting infield is fresh off of a promotion from Triple-A were not particularly high. So, it should come as no surprise that the team’s bats once again sputtered in a 5-2 loss to conclude a four-game series against the Blue Jays https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/jorge-lopez-jersey.Brandon Hyde sent out a lineup befitting the minor league stadium in which the game took place. Ryan McKenna, Domingo Leyba, and Ramón Urías all went from starting for Norfolk one night to making up a third of Baltimore’s lineup the next https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/thomas-eshelman-jersey. But they weren’t half bad. Leyba took an 0-for-4 with two strikeouts while McKenna and Urías combined to go 3-for-8 with a walk and an RBI. That trio was far from the main issue for the Orioles here. The lineup, as a whole, combined to go 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Anthony Santander alone left six runners on base as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. It didn’t start off too bad, however. The O’s starter actually did well to limit the damage, forcing Randal Grichuk to hit into a run-scoring double play followed by a fly out, which left the score tied at one run apiece after two innings.Things wouldn’t work out so nicely in the third inning. He lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on 10 hits, four walks, and two strikeouts. Just 59 of his 100 pitches were thrown for strikes as he struggled to locate or get the Blue Jay hitters to chase his sinker out of the zone. After both team’s starters were lifted from the game after the fifth inning, the bullpens took over and locked the opposing offenses down. Tyler Wells and Dillon Tate combined to toss 3.1 scoreless innings for the Birds.Tate was especially dominant, featuring the absolute best stuff of his career. At one point the right-hander threw a fastball at 99.6 miles per hour, his fastest offering since reaching the big leagues. With tree lots on every corner, at least one giant front-yard inflatable snowman on every block, and candy canes on the end of every single aisle in grocery stores, it’s pretty obvious what time of year we’ve reached. That’s right - MLB’s Winter Meetings are officially on the horizon, with executives from every team, free agents, agents of free agents, some free agent agents, and baseball job-seekers set to descend upon Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas this weekend for five days of transaction bliss.Officially set to begin on Sunday, December 9th and to run through the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday, December 13th, the Winter Meetings usually offer some of the biggest fireworks of the MLB offseason, which is no surprise considering each and every front office is essentially on one big campout for a week, often with piles of funny money to spend. It’s where the Chicago White Sox struck the deal that sent Chris Sale to Boston for Yoan Moncada (and others) back in 2016 Joey Votto Jersey, where the Tigers landed Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis from the Marlins back in 2007, and where the Cincinnati Reds have watched and taken notes for most of the last decade.I kid, slightly. The December 2014 Winter Meetings saw the Reds trade Mat Latos to the Marlins and Alfredo Simon to Detroit on the same day, landing big pieces in Anthony DeSclafani and Eugenio Suarez in one of the first moves of ‘the rebuild.’ And while 2015’s Winter Meetings technically ended on December 10th of that year, the massive three-team deal that saw Todd Frazier sent to Chicago and brought Jose Peraza https://www.crfanshop.com/bernie-carbo-jersey, Scott Schebler, and Brandon Dixon to Cincinnati went down on December 15, 2015, and most of the legwork of that deal was hammered out when reps from the Reds, Dodgers, and White Sox were all in Nashville’s Opryland Hotel. This year, we hope the Reds will be just as active as in those years Rob Dibble Jersey, although with the end result of being on the end of a transaction that, in theory, will be aimed at more immediate success. In other words, we hope like heck that they’re in Las Vegas to do some buying, to push a few chips into the fray and let it roll before we’re all forced to look back at yet another lost decade in this franchise’s history.(No pressure, or anything.)There’s a handy-dandy website that details the exact schedule of ‘events’ slated to go on at Mandalay Bay, though nowhere on the schedule does it actually say ‘Tuesday, 9:26 PM: Cincinnati Reds trade Tyler Stephenson and Vladdy Goots to the Toronto Blue Jays for Marcus Stroman.’ Just like at In-N-Out Burger, there’s a menu that shows up on the big board, but all the Winter Meetings participants know there are a lot more surprises to the real schedule of events.Perhaps of specific note is Thursday’s Rule 5 Draft, since the Reds have maneuvered their 40-man to where they only currently have 36 players rostered. That means they’ve got plenty of space to accommodate a pickup from this year’s edition of misfit toys, with hopes they manage to uncover a star in a manner similar to Jose Bautista, Odubel Herrera, Shane Victorino, Johan Santana, Josh Hamilton, or the inimitable Kelly Grubermullet.

It takes leaps of faith, makes unsubstantiated claims and arrives at the conclusion before searching for supporting evidence. In short, this is my kind of article. Hypothetical baseball is the best kind of baseball because you can just make it up. Real baseball gets a little too science-fiction for me.In this land of infinite hypothetical scenarios, we'll make exactly one change. This change will lead to a hypothetical question. Don't worry about butterflies flapping their wings and eventually making your grandmother leave your grandfather for a circus strongman. Everything else happens more or less as it really did. The timeline snaps back into place, and we're here at the end of July, with the exact same standings around the league and the exact same rosters. The only change is this: Jarrod Dyson doesn't steal third in the ninth inning 2014 AL Wild Card Game. Norichika Aoki flies out harmlessly. Lorenzo Cain hits into bad luck. Game over. Royals get a participation ribbon in the 2014 postseason. The hypothetical question is this: What are the Royals doing right now at the trade deadline? For supporting evidence, we look at what the Royals did last year, when they were 55-52 and four games back at the deadline.July 28, 2014 Traded Danny Valencia to the Toronto Blue Jays. Received Liam Hendriks and Erik Kratz.Mmhmm. And the last time they were contending at the deadline before that?July 28, 2003 Traded Jeremy Hill to the New York Mets. Received Graeme Lloyd.July 31, 2003 Purchased Al Levine from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Steve Balboni Jersey.Right. Last year's inactive deadline came with Dayton Moore in charge. The one from 2003 is probably irrelevant, but helps point out just how long it's been since the Royals bullied other, less fortunate teams at the deadline. It's been decades since the Royals decided that the present was more valuable than the future. Last season was their best chance in 11 years, and the Royals were still more concerned with holding on to their future assets. If the Royals make the Wild Card Game last year but don't make it into the postseason -- that is, the real postseason behind the velvet rope -- I'm guessing they're being very, very mellow right now. It would be a very trust-the-process deadline, with Moore excited about the Royals' chances, but not enough to trade arms of the future like Brandon Finnegan and Sean Manaea. Both of those pitchers were the kind of currency the Royals would hide under the mattress in past seasons. While you might look at a list like this ...... all the Royals' pitching prospects to make Baseball America's top-100 list in the past 20 years:Jeff Granger Jim Pittsley Glendon Rusch Orber Moreno Jeff Austin Dan Reichert Kyle Snyder Chris George Mike MacDougal Jimmy Gobble Zack Greinke Luke Hochevar Dan Cortes Noel Arguelles Aaron Crow Mike Montgomery Chris Dwyer Jake Odorizzi Danny Duffy John Lamb Kyle Zimmer Yordano Ventura Kansas City Royals T-shirtsG...and think something like, "Prospects will break your heart," the Royals looked at it like, "We're due to hit on one of these suckers, just wait." Trusting the process meant that there was some future date in the sacred texts when everything would coalesce. The hitters would join the hurlers, the utility player would lie down with the superstar and the prophecies would come true, verily. This was the plan, this was always the plan, except for the one time Moore went out on a limb and traded his very best prospect for a starting pitcher. The rebuke was swift and loud, especially after it became clear that was pretty much the only move the team was going to make. And if the Shields trade netted the Royals one measly Wild Card game, it would have been natural for Moore and the Royals to crawl back into their comfortable shell. If Dyson doesn't steal third like a wild man, my hypothesis is that the Royals are still waiting around for the roster to come to them. But Dyson did steal third, and he eventually scored the tying run in one of the greatest wins in Royals history. From there, they won 10 more games in the postseason, looking as dominant for stretches as any postseason team in recent memory. They took the momentum into the 2015 season, and they're a fully functional death machine right now. Including the postseason, the Royals are 101-61 in their last 162 games.Does that feel like a team built for the future? No, that's a team built for the now in a way that we couldn't comprehend just a year ago. The Royals are a team that rammed through the city walls on the back a mastodon, and they're yelling for everyone to clamber through. I'm not sure if that feeling is there without the inspiring postseason run, especially one in which the powers of an invincible bullpen were featured so prominently.Moore talked with MLB Trade Rumors about the Ben Zobrist trade:Certainly the play of our team and how our players have responded gives us more motivation to make moves ...Ah-ha!but we've always tried to do whatever we could at the deadline to make our team better for the second half, even when we weren't competing.Well, I'm focusing on the first part because it reinforces my thesis. At least, in part. Maybe the excellent play of the Royals this season would have been enough, regardless of what happened in the Wild Card Game. Maybe it would have been obvious to any and every baseball executive that this was the season the Royals needed to go for it.The taste of the World Series, though, that gaze into that land of wonders, is still what I'm crediting.Regardless of why it happened, who here was ready for Moore to be so danged ready for this type of team? The team needed an ace. Moore went into the woods and came back with an ace. The team needed an infielder, preferably one who could play the outfield, too. Moore came back with the best player to match that description in the last 10 years https://www.kcrgear.com/scott-barlow-jersey.As for what the Royals gave up, well, maybe they gave up a future Zack Greinke, or maybe they gave up a future Jimmy Gobble. The other teams seem happy with their new prospects. The Royals are just happy with their new, excellent major leaguers, who are here to help right now.Five seasons ago, the Royals had the best farm system in baseball, and it wasn't especially close. The idea was that most of the top prospects would pan out, because that's the cycle of life. There were detours and plot twists, though, as there always are. When the Royals tripped into a postseason spot (by outperforming their Pythagorean record), it was fun, but it hardly seemed like the start of a dynasty. What the Royals have done since then has made it obvious that they're relevant now and for the immediate future, enough to where it made sense to set pieces of the distant future on fire. The process produced the homegrown talent. The process caulked the holes around that talent. Look at the damned Royals right now. Maybe I should have trusted the process just a little bit more.I can't help but wonder, though, if everything would have been the same without that one stolen base in the ninth inning of a Wild Card game in which the Royals had no earthly business coming back. It might have been -- if you're willing to squint with me and assume things you shouldn't assume -- the turning point of a franchise.★★★SB Nation presents: Can A-Rod become the all-time home run king?

two shutdown innings from the Seattle bullpen, and three Mariners home runs negated a quality start from Jordan Montgomery today at T-Mobile Park. The 4-0 loss prevented the Yankees from completing the series sweep and also ended New York’s three-game win streak on an eerily quiet note.It had been noted both on our PSA game preview and on the YES Network pregame show that Montgomery has been excellent at generating weak contact. Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager clearly didn’t get the memo, evidenced by his 105-mph laser over the center-field wall in the top of the first inning. Although it was only a 1-0 lead, it was a loud 1-0 lead that the Mariners took into the second inning — particularly after falling down early to the Yankees during the previous two nights.Apparently, the memo regarding Montgomery’s exit velocity allowed didn’t make it around the Mariners’ clubhouse at all https://www.nyygear.com/don-mattingly-jersey, as the second inning showed that Seager wasn’t the only one to miss it Gerrit Cole Jersey. With two out, DH Luis Torrens lined a single 103.7-mph off the bat, and second baseman Dylan Moore followed with his own clothesline struck at 103.6. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Moore’s was hit with a launch angle of 29 degrees, so it traveled 409 feet over the outfield wall. When it landed, the Yankees were down by three runs. Those of us who were nervous that the game could get out of control early had our concerns assuaged slowly but surely. After the rocky start, Montgomery went on to retire 15 of the next 17 batters, allowing only a single and base on balls over that stretch. When he was replaced after a two-out, nobody on base, walk to Moore, Montgomery left with another quality start on his resume. He finished with a final line of 6.2 innings pitched, allowing three runs on only four hits while striking out nine batters. (In part thanks to reliever Justin Wilson who induced a harmless pop-out from Jake Bauers to strand the inherited runner.)The only problem for the Yankees was that the Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert was even better than Montgomery. The 24-year-old rookie held the Yankees scoreless with eight strikeouts and no walks, retiring 18 batters in a row to finish his afternoon of dominance. The Bombers simply had no answers for him, as they registered just a single hit (a second-inning double by Giancarlo Stanton). Even the majority of the outs were quiet, as other than two hard-hit groundouts – one from Aaron Judge, one from Gary Sánchez – the Yankee bats were quiet as field mice.An eighth-inning solo homer from Mitch Haniger made the score 4-0 https://www.nyygear.com/jorge-posada-jersey, but that turned out to be a superfluous tack on-run. The Yankees had as much success against Seattle relievers Paul Sewald and Kendall Graveman as they had against Gilbert – which is to say “none.” When it was all over, Seattle pitching held the Yankees scoreless on only one hit, while walking none and fanning 10 batters.Although it ended with a whimper, the Yankees took two out of three against Seattle and would love to do the same to Houston this weekend. The three-game series starts tomorrow at Minute Maid Park in Houston, first pitch is at 8:10 pm EDT. With Michael King out, Nestor Cortes Jr. will get the ball against Jake Odorizzi.Box Score
